about

“An old song, of the olden times; which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man."

So said Robert Burns (1759 – 1796), the Scottish poet who collected and rewrote this song to become the classic we all know today. From the beauty of the poetry, we might suspect he wrote most of it e.g. “But seas between us broad have roared / Since Auld Lang Syne.” This is an English version of the original Scots.

But the tune Burns had in mind does not match the tune that is commonly sung at New Year. Nor does it match the Celtic melody used in this version, because this version follows the traditional tune which has been so beautifully revived by Scottish folk singer Eddi Reader.

Jessie Morgan sings the duet and plays violin.

lyrics

--- AULD LANG SYNE ---

Collected and rewritten by Robert Burns
(1759 - 1796) in the 1780s
===============================
[V.1] Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne ?
--------------------------------------
[ CHORUS 1 ]
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
For the sake of auld lang syne.
For the sake of auld lang syne.
==========================
[V.2] We two have roamed about the hills
And picked wild daisies fine.
We’ve wandered many a weary step
Since auld lang syne.
-----------------------------------
[CHORUS 2 ]
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ve wandered many a weary step
Since auld lang syne.
Since auld lang syne.
===========================
[V.3] We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us broad have roared
Since auld lang syne.
-------------------------------
[CHORUS 3 ]
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
But seas between us broad have roared
Since auld lang syne.
Since auld lang syne.
=========================
[V.4] And surely you’ll have your pint pot !
And surely I’ll have mine !
We’ll take a right good-will draught,
For the sake of auld lang syne.
----------------------------------------
[CHORUS 4 ]
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a right good-will draught,
For the sake of auld lang syne.
For the sake of auld lang syne.
============================
[V.5] And here’s a hand, my trusty friend !
And gie’s a hand o’ thine !
We'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
------------------------------------------
[CHORUS 5 ]
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne.
===========================
[ ENDING ]
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne ?
